Lowering springs swap the factory springs for shorter ones and keep the shock absorbers you already have, so the drop is fixed by the spring and the ride depends on those shocks. Coilovers replace the shock and spring with one unit whose height you set on a threaded body, and FalcX coilovers have adjustable damping too. Choose springs for a fixed drop on shocks that are in good order. Choose coilovers if you want to set the height yourself, change it later or tune the ride. That applies to every Falcon from EA to FGX. We sell coilovers, not lowering springs, so weigh our view with that in mind.
What do lowering springs change?
A lowering spring sets the drop. Once it's in, the ride height is whatever that spring gives you, and the damping is whatever your shocks give you. If you want a different height later, that's another set of springs.
The shocks matter. A shock works over a set range of travel, and a lower car uses a different part of that range. Ask the spring maker whether your existing shocks suit the lower height before you buy, and budget for shocks if they don't or if yours are tired.
What do FalcX coilovers change?
- Ride height is set with the adjuster rings on the threaded body, so you choose the drop and can change it later.
- Damping is adjustable, from daily comfort to firmer track use.
- Front springs come in Standard, 18 kg or 22 kg, and replacement front springs are sold as a pair if you want a different rate later.
- On BA, BF, FG and FGX sedans the rear is a true coilover: the separate factory rear spring comes out and doesn't go back in.
- They're a direct bolt-on, with no cutting or modifying.

Which is better for a daily-driven Falcon?
Either can work on a daily. Springs suit you if you want a modest, fixed drop, your shocks are in good order and you won't want to change it. Coilovers suit you if you want to choose the exact height, match the front to the rear, change it later, or set the ride firmer or softer. For a daily on FalcX coilovers, the Standard front spring rate is the street option; our spring rate guide explains the other two.
How low can a lowered Falcon legally go?
There are rules on how far a registered car can be lowered, and they're set by each state. Check the current rules for your state, or ask a vehicle certifier, before you set the height. With coilovers the limit is about where you set the height, not the part itself.
What about utes and wagons?
Every Falcon ute and wagon has leaf springs at the rear, so FalcX coilovers for them are a front pair only, and anything you do to the rear is a separate job. Our Falcon ute and wagon coilover guide covers what fits each series.
Which FalcX coilovers fit my Falcon?
- EA to EL and AU, every body style: the EA–AU front pair.
- BA–BF sedans: BA–BF coilovers as a full set, front pair or rear pair. Utes and wagons: front pair.
- FG–FGX sedans: FG–FGX coilovers as a full set, front pair or rear pair. Utes: front pair.
- BA to FGX sedans can also buy the BA–FGX rear coilovers on their own.

Whichever you choose, get an alignment
Changing ride height changes camber and toe, so get a wheel alignment once the car is at its new height and has settled. Our guide to wheel alignment after lowering a Falcon covers when to book it and what to ask for, and fitting and setting up Falcon coilovers covers the order of jobs.
Common questions
Can I fit lowering springs to FalcX coilovers?
No. Lowering springs are made for the factory strut or shock. FalcX coilovers take their own springs, and replacement front springs for them are sold as a pair in 12, 18 and 22 kg.
Do lowering springs need new shocks?
Not always, but ask the spring maker whether your shocks suit the lower height. Tired shocks on lowering springs won't ride well.
Are coilovers harsher than lowering springs?
Not by nature. How a car rides depends on the spring rate and the damping. On FalcX coilovers the damping is adjustable and the Standard front rate is the one for street driving.
Do I need a wheel alignment after lowering?
Yes, after either. Any change in ride height moves camber and toe.
Can I lower a Falcon ute with coilovers?
At the front, yes, with a front pair for its series. The rear has leaf springs, so lowering it is a separate job.
